GL Assessment (NFER) VR Question Types
11 Plus Verbal Reasoning Multiple Choice Question Types by Region
There are 21 types of question set by GL Assessment for the 11 Plus, although in some areas only the first 15 types will appear on the question paper. We aim to publish the latest information for each area, but the test types are subject to change without notice by the authorities and therefore serve as a rough guide only.

Note: IPS = Internet Primary School, who were one of the first publishers to categorise the question styles for Verbal Reasoning using a lettering system. The numbering system used here is consistent with the interactive software and other products available on this website.
Note that the last 6 types – the additional questions used in certain areas – are frequently referred to as “HIKNOS”.
Question Types Grouped Together
When tutoring a child at home it may help to link question types together rather than to go through each of the 21 question types in order. This is because some question types can be worked out by using similar methods & techniques. This is his suggested list:
