The term “Surrey” is a misnomer, because none of the grammar schools commonly referred to as being in Surrey are administered by Surrey County Council. However “Surrey” is used as an umbrella term for the grammar schools in the London Boroughs of Kingston-upon-Thames and Sutton.

The Surrey grammar schools are among the most fiercely competitive for entry in the country, with as many as ten applicants for each school place.

Sutton Grammar Schools

Greenshaw High School, Nonsuch High School for Girls, Sutton Grammar School, Wallington Country Grammar, Wallington High School for Girls, Wilson’s School.

There are 5 fully selective Grammar Schools in Sutton and one partially selective school, Greenshaw High School. All 6 schools participate in the ‘Selective Eligibility Test’ (SET).

Parents have to fill in a Supplementary Form to sit the Selective Eligibility Test (1st stage) which can be downloaded from any of the schools’ websites. Only one form needs to be filled in even if you are applying to more than one of the schools.

Each school will be administering the 1st test on the same day at the same time. Applicants will be allocated a venue that is nearest to them. All girls will sit the test at Greenshaw High School. It is not possible to request a venue.

Greenshaw High School use the outcome of the Selective Eligibility Test to determine which children will be eligible for 60 selective places.

Wallington County Grammar School uses the SET test to determine which children will be eligible for a place. Both schools do not have a second test.

Nonsuch, Sutton Grammar School, Wallington High School and Wilson’s use the first test to determine which children are eligible to sit the second test.

Girls will be allocated to sit the Selective Eligibility Test at either Nonsuch, Wallington High School for Girls, or Greenshaw School.

Boys will be allocated to sit the test at Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar school, Wilson’s or Greenshaw.

It is not possible to request a venue. Where your child sits the test has no relevance to the preference for a place.
