The reading schools include Reading School for Boys, Reading Girls School and Kendrick School for Girls. Each school has their own entrance exams.

Kendrick School Girls

From 2014 to 2022 the Kendrick Girls’ School entrance exam was set by CEM (University of Cambridge) shared with a group of schools, namely the Slough Consortium schools, Ilford County High School Woodford County High School and and Chelmsford County High School.

From September 2023 the school moved to GL Assessment as their exam provider and the exam is no longer shared with any other schools.

Competence in Key Stage 2 English and Maths is needed

Reading School (Boys)

Reading School for Boys is one of the oldest schools in England, having been founded in 1125. The school accepts day pupils and boarders who pay only for food and lodging.

The school writes it own tests. There will be three question booklets, each with its own answer sheet . Paper 1 and 2 is divided into separate sections in Maths and English. Questions will be multiple choice and standard. Some of the questions may be more difficult than your child is used to at school. The instructions before, during and after all parts of the test will be given via a voice recording.
 
Maths content is similar to GL or quickfire CEM questions.
English is a mix of comprehension and VR questions that are closer to the CEM style.
 
Paper 3 is a writing task – ‘You will be given a question booklet with the instructions. There will be space in the question booklet for you to
make rough notes and to plan your answer – this will NOT be marked. You will also be given a separate answer sheet to write your answer on. ONLY the answer sheet will be marked’

Reading Girls’ School

Reading Girls’ school is a comprehensive school that also have a Selective Stream which provides a more intensive education. It enables the most able girls to progress through an enhanced curriculum.

Reading Girls’ School has 210 places in Year 7, of which up to 42 are selective places. The following information from the Reading Borough Council Admissions brochure shows that the school is generally under-subscribed, although there is no indication of whether the 42 selective places are usually not filled.
